The second one I had removed 3 months later, it's healing just fine and I no longer have pain with those nails pinching my skin together and killing the skin under my toe. I don't know anyone who has had to go through the issues I've had with ingrown toenails and I'm glad I found someone's personal experience. I had the nails removed on the advice of the Podiatrist.I'm now wearing polish on the first one that was removed, you can't tell that I have no nail. Toenails are far from what defines someone's attractiveness. I don't really think they are there for anything particularly useful, but for aesthetic purposes. I had the sides removed of each of the nails a few years back and I also had the both nails removed on the toes next to the big toes but they all grew back whilst they were healing.I'm a marathon runner and just had my second big toenail permanently removed by the same doc who did my first one. Most of the time toenails are covered up and people generally don't look at a person's feet first. I am just preying my toes heal soon as I cannot go back to work whilst they are weeping and I may lose my job!! I had dealt with ingrown toenails for several years....... I still cannot bear to wear any shoes so I am wearing flip flops or sandals and it is freezing.I am nearly 50 - and for the past 40 years I have had to dig out my ingrown Big Toe Nails every few months - so over it. Both toes are still weeping and I have to change the dressing twice daily.

You're an attractive woman i don't see how you let your nails go i can't say i agree with your decision on killing the nailbed on both feet, you need that nail protection obviously the regret is there but you have resigned yourself to the fact its gone and you have found peace with the decision and moved on but you still have to live with it the rest of your life. I heard that the nail remover is painful if you try to remove nail polish. Does the toe skin become hardened and I can wear any type of shoe? Well, I have 3 toenails that are infected with fungus & going to get it surgically removed in 2 days, but I'm not sure if I want to try & let my nails grow back & pray they don't get infected again or if I should chemical destroy the nails. I have a HUGE problem with people touching my feet, so going into the dr office made me sick at my stomach......yes, the shots were not easy to deal with, but only lasted a few minutes,,,,,,pulling the nails off took less time than the shots, and I am healing well already.

I disagree in principle with the podiatrists and the quick advice to kill nail beds i am glad i didnt listen to many and kill my nailbed i would be regret n in depression if i knew it would never grow back, its easy for others to say go ahead n do it because they wont have to live with the consequences of no protection for the toe when u bang it hard or stub it....i had many give me bad advice n i ignored them all both my big toes grew new ones out naturally regeneration THATS RIGHT REGENERATION, the body has the ability to use your genes to grow back and make new i won't listen to anyone or let anyone kill my nailbed no way not gonna happen a stupid PA telling me this is the best option is ignorant, once u take the whole nail off it will attempt to grow a new one, killing the nail bed makes absolutely no sense at all the podiatrist wants a quick fee and doesnt care about you really they can stick it i know my body and know it will grow a new nail back naturarly eom I am also wondering if I should do the permanent kill of the nail? Soaked my feet in Epsom salts today.....feel soooooo much better!

If you are thinking about having this done, I suggest permanent removal, so they don't grow back and you have to do it all over again....... I had my left toenail permanently removed about 5 years ago And have since never worn open toe shoes.

I can without the pain the bugger caused but I now have serious confidence issues about my feet. When I wear closed toed shoes and my feet get warm, my toes get soft and they are tender.

Is there a procedure available to artificially or in other ways replace the toenail?? It has now been 7 months and the other day I dropped an empty kitty litter container made of plastic in one of my toes. How long does this take to go away or will it ever?
